I get a spam message or two every day offering to sell Symantec software at ridiculously low prices. This article confirms that the software is pirated, which is what you’d expect. Two additional details are worth noting.
First, many of the counterfeit software scams are also credit card scams, set up to harvest your credit card number and do bad things with it.
Second, the reason you’re not seeing similar messages about Microsoft software is because Microsoft added its “product activation” requirement – and the wave of pirates is going to cause Symantec to add DRM measures to all of its products beginning later this year. Expect your software costs to go up as all the software vendors begin locking up their products.
