If you got a new Windows 7 computer for Xmas, I hope you thought about security before you spent too much time playing online. I know, it’s not very exciting, but it needs to be done. I’m spending Monday morning trying to recover data from a computer that was taken down by malware, so I’ve got security on my mind.

Two weeks ago independent lab AV-Comparatives.org ranked Microsoft Security Essentials as one of the best programs available at any price for catching and removing malware, and last week it found that MSE had a lower impact on system performance than almost any other program. In both cases, MSE was the best-performing free program and in the top ranks of all programs, paid and free. The conclusions match the other studies that I’ve seen: MSE is fast, effective, and light on system resources.
