Before we begin our article about Wi-Fi mesh networks, I would like to say a few words. And here they are: Amplifi! Orbi! Luma! Eero! Thank you.
Wi-Fi is taking a big step forward in homes and small offices this year.
Almost everyone at home or in a small business relies on one device broadcasting the wireless signal. If the signal doesn’t cover part of the home or office, there has not been any easy way to solve that problem. “Range extenders” have never worked.
Suddenly there are lots of new devices that make it easier to set up a home or small business Wi-Fi mesh network that covers the entire building. The concept is the same for all of them: Two or more devices broadcast the Wi-Fi signal so your devices can connect to whichever one is closer, without requiring you to give it any thought.
It probably seems like that should have been possible already. After all, when you go to a hotel, Wi-Fi covers the whole hotel, right? It turns out the hotel has paid quite a lot for the enterprise-level equipment that makes the system work.
The new generation of equipment coming on the market now has three things in common.
(1) Each one simplifies setup to bypass networking jargon as much as possible. Typically the setup is done with a phone app. Some of them provide feedback by changing the color of lights on the devices.
(2) Each one uses two or more devices that are designed to talk to each other about the wireless behind the scenes. You don’t have to know anything about networking for that to work.
(3) Each one has an unusual name, because new products are required to have unusual names. But that’s become commonplace. Heck, to an old-timer, most babies have unusual names.
Before I tell you any details, a word of caution. I’ve never seen one of these devices – never touched one, never gone through the setup, no personal experience to know if they live up to their promises or have quirks. All I can tell you after years of experience is that the idea behind these devices makes sense. It is exactly what you have needed for a long time.
First, the concept, then some notes about the models on the market. You have to understand a bit of jargon, but only a bit.
Stick with me while I generalize.
There are two things happening to your Internet connection when it comes into the building.
• You have a modem. It takes the signal from your ISP and turns it into something that your devices understand.
• You have a wireless router. It takes over and makes it possible for multiple devices to use the Internet connection. Typically it’s broadcasting the Wi-Fi network. Wired devices plug into the ports on the back of the router.
Comcast or AT&T might have given you one box with blinking lights that does all of those jobs. Or you might have two boxes, very common – the modem from your ISP, and a wireless router for everything else. You might have three or more boxes – the modem, the router, and separate wireless access points.
The new Wi-Fi devices replace the wireless router. You still need the modem from the ISP. If you have an all-in-one box or you prefer to use your existing router, you can still use these new devices, but you might wind up learning some network vocabulary (“bridge,” “double NAT”) before you’re done.
Think about where your Internet equipment is now. The modem and router are usually in a closet, a back office, a server room, or the garage. It’s seldom the place you would pick to broadcast a wireless signal that covers the whole premises.
The new mesh network devices come in a box with two or three attractive little devices. One of them plugs into the modem in that closet or back office. Usually it will be replacing the existing router.
You’ll then walk towards the center of the building with the second device. You’re looking for the place where the two devices are able to have a strong connection to each other, and the second one can broadcast an overlapping circle that covers more of the building.
Look at the picture at the top of the article. That’s the idea.
Netgear just announced Orbi, shown in the above picture, and will begin shipping them later this month. For $400, you’ll get a pair of devices – one to sit near the ISP modem, one to position in a central location. With luck you’ll think they’re attractive enough to sit out in the open for a better signal, instead of under a desk or in a closet. Netgear says the pair of devices will be able to cover up to 4000 square feet with a strong wireless signal. Netgear claims that the two devices will talk to each other on a dedicated channel that is different from the 2.5/5Ghz channels used for the Wi-Fi, meaning the chatter between the two devices will not overlap or interfere with the wireless connection to your phone or laptop. That’s an elegant and creative solution. You know, if it works.
Setting up the Wi-Fi network is done with an Android or iOS app. A light on top of the second device will tell you where to put it – magenta for a strong signal, amber for a mediocre signal, blue for out of range. And that’s it for setup. When you connect to the Wi-Fi, your device will automatically pick the one that’s closest, and switch from one to the other automatically as you move around.
You will be able to add another Orbi or two if you need even more coverage. But don’t get too ambitious: these are not enterprise devices and you’re not going to run a hotel with Orbi.

Netgear claims that Orbi has advantages over Eero and Luma, two competing devices already on the market that have generated much buzz in the tech press. Both Eero and Luma provide three devices instead of two to get similar coverage to what Netgear claims. They’re smaller and less conspicuous, but that’s partially because they have to be closer to each other than Orbi devices, and they don’t have that separate channel to handle communication among the devices separate from the Wi-Fi traffic. Both systems are expensive, like Orbi, and you can discover many people pointing out quirks in reviews online now that they’ve been available for a few months. Eero and Luma are both startup ventures trying to beat the established companies like Netgear to market. Reviews are generally complimentary but it feels like both Eero and Luma need time to mature – and Netgear and the rest may not give them much time.
Prices are in flux as all this new equipment hits the market and competes with each other with specials and discounts. Kits will be somewhere between $300-500, far more than the simple $100 Linksys router that still sits in many homes and offices. If you need the extra coverage, it’s a small price to pay. Enterprise-level equipment for extended coverage has cost far more in the past, both for the equipment and for a network specialist to set things up.

Last and possibly best. Amplifi is the first home product from a division of Ubiquiti, the company that I’ve relied on for its enterprise-quality access points for the last few years. I wrote up the Ubiquiti Unifi products here and have set up many of them in homes and offices. They require a bit of expertise to set up and maintain, but the payoff has been extended range that goes far beyond any other comparably priced equipment, and rock solid reliability. Everything connects to Unifi wireless access points, and everything stays connected. I’ve never had to power-cycle a Unifi wireless access point. I’ve never had to answer questions about why some device can’t connect to one. They just work.
So I have high hopes for the Amplifi devices from the same company, announced a few months ago and just starting to ship. There are three versions with similar features, each one stepping up the strength of the Wi-Fi signal, ranging in price from $199 to $349 for a kit with a base unit and two mesh points. Each piece is smaller than you’d expect from the pictures. The mesh points plug directly into a wall outlet and hug the wall, instead of sitting out on a table. Setup is similar to the others, using a phone app and LEDs on the mesh points to help get them placed correctly. Complimentary reviews are starting to appear – there are samples here, here, and here – and the reviewers seem to be calling out the same things that have made me a fan of other Ubiquiti products. “Once configured, things just sort of worked—which is exactly what you want in a system like this.” “What I do know is that the Amplifi has served up a rock-solid network since I plugged it in.” “The performance of this platform is simply amazing. And I’m not really talking about pure numbers here, it’s more about what you feel when you use your smartphone around the house or have your laptop out on the deck or patio, you feel connected.”
At the moment it appears that Amplifi is only being sold direct from Ubiquiti. Perhaps the company is still ramping up production.
Mesh networking is the future. It’s easy to predict that other manufacturers will offer similar products soon. Traditional router setups will seem quaint very quickly.
It’s worth noting, though, that there is a huge range of expectations that people bring to their networks. All of the home mesh network devices are designed for simple setup – and that means they may not offer options that you think simply must be included. Make sure you choose wisely. Some examples of features that may or may not be supported:
• Guest networks that have Internet access but no access to other computers or devices on the network
• Port forwarding
• Parental controls to restrict access for certain computers or to limit use at certain times of the day
• Content monitoring or filtering
• Additional security features beyond basic NAT firewall
• Configuration of router settings – DHCP scope, Wi-Fi channels and bandwidth, VLANs, and WPA2 Enterprise, for example
If you’re frustrated by the Wi-Fi coverage in your home or office, relief may be in sight. This will be an active category and you can expect more announcements. You may have a mesh network soon.

I’ve poured over countless reviews about various systems and trying to decide which is the right one for me. I’m a network manager and have been in networking for over 15 years so I know my way around networking. The one thing I find comical based on a lot of reviews is the app for Orbi being limited. I do networking all day long and when I get home I don’t want to fool with my home system. I want to set it up and forget it. So for me I’m going with Orbi for the dedicated backhaul channel and the better throughout. About time the consumer side came out with mesh wireless like we run in the corporate world. Thanks all for the great insight.
FWIW, if you can run one or two wires, don’t overlook Ubiquiti’s Unifi WAPs. The setup would be a piece of cake if you have networking experience (it’s almost easy enough for non-technical folks), and there’s really no comparison for speed and stability. The Unifi WAPs are just great – if you can get a cable to each one. Good luck!
New homeowner here, current Apple Airport Extreme user. I knew closing and moving in (a three-story concrete tunnel form townhouse in South Florida) over Christmas weekend, combined with the news Apple is abandoning the Airport series, that it was time for me to look for a new wifi solution. From what I’ve heard and read, concrete construction would present some unique problems for me. Aside from the solid concrete floors and walls, I have three flights of concrete and steel stairs running along the center core of my home.
As a self-proclaimed “tech/gadget nut” my research led me to mesh networks. Lots of names came up including Eero, the AmplifiHD, Plume, Google Wifi, Orbi (which I realize isn’t really mesh), etc. I researched the various options and debated which solution to try, but ultimately Costco’s Orbi 3-pack won me over. (Of course, the other known advantages like the dedicated 5ghz backhaul and better antennae certainly helped.)
Install was a relative breeze, albeit Netgear still has a way to go before they come close to the usability of web and app interfaces, like Linksys’ SmartWifi. In any event after a little tweaking the network was up and running; central Orbi unit on the second floor where the living room and entertainment center is located, satellite Orbis are positioned one each on the first and third levels. Throughput details vary a smidge, but in general, pings are consistently in the 3-4ms range, downstream averages in the 350-390mbps area and uploads are very similar from nearly every point in the home.
Still, I was torn with knowing I abandoned my CAT5e wiring throughout the townhouse which could provide something more beneficial like wired backhaul (Orbi doesn’t support) or perhaps a per-level MU-MIMO access point solution. Plus I don’t care for Netgear’s parental control solution (OpenDNS) as it severely lacks compared to other manufacturers’ solutions (e.g. Linksys SmartWifi).
So I went to Best Buy and purchased the Linksys EA9500 (base aka “dead spider”) and an RE7000 (extender) to see what $600 could buy in a different brand/solution. After the requisite setup and running a similar test scenario (iPhone 7+ in similar points with same additional devices connected in the background), the speeds were noticeably different. Ping averaged 5-7ms, downstream ranged from 90-310mbps and uploads were of similar speeds. I did find the Linksys to have a far superior app and setup process, with many more access control features and capabilities such as parental controls.
Keep in mind this wasn’t scientific in any way and I was not comparing apples to apples, but I would say that I was doing what most consumers would do and that is to test based on advertised specs/capabilities and comparable price points.
Bottom line the Linksys is sadly going back and the Orbi is staying. I can’t handle the speed degradation as a sacrifice for good UI/UX. Perhaps I’ll come up with another alternative before my Costco return window expires.

Interesting! Thanks for taking the time to post your results. I’ve been watching the reviews as more sites do comparisons of the various new routers. My general impression is that all of them are more or less comparable. There’s always something that tips the scales for each reviewer – performance is slightly better with one or another, the app is better designed, or something about another characteristic is good or bad. I haven’t seen anything that makes one jump to the head of the pack or disqualifies any of them. You should get good results from the Orbi.
The consensus continues to be that nothing matches the performance from wired connections. If you have the option to run one or two wires to distant places in the house, you can get even better speed and range from Ubiquiti’s Unifi LR access points. But you’ll have a much clumsier setup involving a computer and a Java based app that’s easy for IT folks and techies, a bit much for non-tech people.

I purchased the base version of Ampliphi two months ago and I connect my Guest house to my network via the MESH system. While the Mesh Points try to connect directly to the base station, in time it has learned to connect to the other Mesh Point. so my screen (on the Amplifi app) looks left to right, Base-Mesh Point- Mesh Point.
It was simple to setup, but it do not like the avalibility of a web interface to control the system. UBNT support says that a new firmware release is coming that will allow web interface and DDNS support.
That sounds like pretty good news, if it got smarter and starting doing a better job of moving things along after a while. I haven’t used one yet but I’m used to the business wireless access points made by Ubiquiti – “Unifi” – where they have to be controlled from a Java app on a computer. It’s a bit inconvenient but they’re so much better than the competition that it’s worth it. Hope you feel the same way about the Amplifi. Thanks!
I’m reticent to get the Netgear Orbi for two reason: 1.) it only has two devices and I have a downstairs office and 2.) Netgear was late to the Mesh Party for some strange reason and the use of 3 router/access points makes more sense to me . That said, knowing that the Orbi is 3000 vs 1300 or less for the others is eye opening.
I haven’t seen much real world feedback about any of these devices from people who have used them – just articles (like mine) written from the press releases. So look for more recent comments from people who have lived with them for 60 days. With that in mind, look carefully at the Unifi devices. I hold that company in high regard based on my experience with their enterprise wireless. Good luck!
I have the Amplifi Base model and let me just say it is not a MESH. The mesh points connect directly to the router serving as extenders/repeaters . I was disappointed by it. I am hoping to buy the Google Wifi and check that out.
Is the Ubiquiti AmpliFi hardware software upgrable to add features like MU-MIMO, WPA2 Enterprise or are those hardware limitations? I’ve pre-ordered the HD version, but I’m tempted to cancel the order if the hardware will never been on par with Netgear’s Orbi or many other 2yr old routers.
I don’t know – I haven’t been able to try them yet. Don’t overlook the Unifi line of WAPs – inexpensive and full featured.
Techies setting up a network for a non-techie need remote access to the router for debugging. The user guide for the Ubiquiti Amplifi system specifically says this is not supported. It is unlikely that any of the other mesh systems support it either
You’re right. But there may not be a good answer to that for home users. This is all about multiple WAPs for extended coverage. I’m not aware of any WAPs that support remote access to multiple access points until you get up to the high-priced enterprise WAPs, way out of reach for home users. Even Ubiquiti’s Unifi lineup can only be administered thru its onsite app, unless you put in one of its Cloud Keys. (I haven’t installed one yet but the Cloud Keys are a pretty nifty idea in the right situation. They add a hundred dollars to the cost of the wireless system and are probably overkill for home users but an interesting option for business WAPs.)
